The competition founded in 2000, and organized by the UIAA since 2002, will be contested between December and February in four countries across three continents as a talented field of international ice climbers engage in competitive action in both speed and lead disciplines.
The 2016 season, sponsored by The North Face Korea, opens with the North American Championships in Bozeman, Montana between 10-12 December. Competition intensifies after the New Year. Cheongsong, South Korea will host the second event – comprising the Asian Championships – before two competitions in Europe, Saas Fee (Switzerland) and Rabenstein (Italy).

The competitions initially scheduled for Busteni (Romania) and Kirov (Russia) no longer form part of the calendar.

Ice climbing continues its ascendancy in the international stage with the recent announcement that it will be part of the Sports Initiation Programme at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer. The ultimate goal for the sport remains the inclusion of ice climbing as a competition sport at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
