OIA Joins 1% for the Planet as Environmental Partner

Published by Mountainblog on .

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has joined the global movement 1% for the Planet after being accepted as an Environmental Partner.
1% for the Planet Environmental Partners are carefully vetted organisations and programs that have proven alignment with 1% for the Planet’s Impact Areas.

For 1% members who already donate an audited 1% to corporate social responsibility (CSR) causes, their OIA membership costs can now come from that donation – so their OIA membership cost is in effect offset against that 1%. In addition, companies which are also 1% for the Planet Members could donate directly for special projects with the OIA as an approved environmental partner, and can certify those donations as part of their annual commitment.

Andrew Denton, CEO of the OIA, said, “I am so pleased that the OIA is now an official environmental partner of 1% For The Planet, joining a global group of more than 7000 partners across 110 countries. The work 1% for the Planet do in inspiring businesses and individuals towards better solutions for the future of the environment, aligns perfectly with the OIA’s mission to grow the outdoors for the benefit of everyone in the UK. Increasingly, the outdoor industry as a whole is leading the way in factoring in the environmental impact of everything they do, and we look forward as an Association to learning from, and feeding into, the vital work that 1% for the Planet is doing.
“The OIA already comprises more than 200 organisations operating in the outdoor recreation sector, and I hope that this will encourage many more to join them; together, we are stronger, and together we can support and grow the whole industry for the benefit of all.”

oiaLike the OIA, the roots of 1% for the Planet are firmly in the outdoor industry, the organisation having been founded in 2002 by Yves Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, as a way to encourage and help companies to commit to donating at least 1% of annual sales directly to environmental organisations. Environmental Partners are organisations working for the benefit of people and the environment, with missions that span across a wide range of impacts, from climate justice and urban infrastructure to gender equality; indigenous land rights to supply chain sustainability; conservation policy to environmental education, and beyond.
