Spotlight on Bouldering
As speed climbing takes a break for a couple of weeks, the full attention of sport climbing fans turns back to the bouldering athletes.
The recent Bouldering World Cup in Wujiang, China saw a very strong turnout from the Japanese climbing team, with seven of their athletes making it to finals and walking away with four of the six possible medals. However, many of the Japanese athletes will not be competing in the upcoming competition, including Wujiang gold medalist Tomoa NARASAKI, three-time 2019 silver medalist Akiyo NOGUCHI and the newly returned Miho NONAKA, effectively freeing up potential spots for some new finalists. It will be interesting to see who makes it to the podium.
Recent women’s bouldering finalists, Fanny GILBERT (FRA) and Jessica PILZ (AUT), and recent men’s bouldering finalists Jakob SCHUBERT (AUT) and Anze PEHARC (SLO) are top contenders.
Slovenian climber, Janja GARNBRET, who is currently 4-for-4 in Bouldering World Cup 2019 wins is planning on competing with her sights set on gold medal number five.
Her compatriot, Jernej KRUDER, along with fellow competition favorite, Adam ONDRA (CZE) are both determined to make a comeback in Munich after neither made it past the semi-final round in Wujiang.
KRUDER and ONDRA have both won a world cup this season in Moscow and Meiringen respectively.
Wujiang finalist, Jan HOJER (GER) and his German teammate, Alexander MEGOS will both have the home field advantage this time around with the support of the local crowd cheering them on.
