There is no need to go very far or face long and tiring journeys: to visit the locations of the First World War just spend a holiday at Passo San Pellegrino.

The mountain stations for the Costabella chairlift and the Col Margherita funicular lift are the starting points for numerous routes featuring remains and testimonials left behind by the Italian and Austria-Hungarian armies. Some of the most beautiful itineraries include the Alta Via Bruno Federspiel on the Monzoni chain, an extremely valuable area from a geological and mineralogical point of view as well. The Alta Via Mariotta follows a scenic ridge between the Col Margherita and Forcella Juribrutto, which was the cardinal point in the Italian defences for the valley of Passo San Pellegrino, and the Alta Via Bepi Zac on the Creste di Costabella is a stupendous trek using attached cables and wooden stairways along the old Austrian supply routes from the First World War. Not to mention the area of Cima Bocche where caves, trenches and military barracks belonging to both armies still look much like they did back then.

Also, don’t miss the event called “Dawn on the Front”, scheduled for Saturday, August 9th, at 5:00 a.m. on Col Margherita. Stories from the Great War are preserved by the Association “Fronte dei Ricordi” in Moena and accompanied by a special concert by the Val Biois choir.
