deuter Vertrail – a waterproof backpack for speed mountaineers

Endurance sports and mountain sports are increasingly being combined. Classic alpine routes, that used to be completed over two or three days, are now being climbed in less than half the time. But these incredible feats also ask more of the gear that is used. The deuter Vertrail is a compact, waterproof backpack for ambitious speed mountaineers who want to go fast and light in any weather. deuter received the coveted ISPO Award 2022 for the Vertrail.

Vest-style carry system for a seamless fit and balance support

deuter has developed the new Vertrail backpack to meet the needs of this target group. It combines the hardwearing performance and technical features of a lightweight climbing pack with the vest-style carrying system used for trail running backpacks. In particular, this means it has wide, ergonomic shoulder straps and comes with the comfortable deuter Lite back system. This helps keep gear compact and snug against the body, which is important when moving at speed or maintaining balance through more exposed sections.

But the vest design also has another advantage. The pockets and straps on the front of the wide shoulder straps mean that equipment like a cell phone, GPS system, soft flasks or energy bars can be stored within easy reach for on-the move access. And there is also a holster on the shoulder straps for collapsible trekking poles. Bungee cords and gear loops offer flexible attachment options for items like a helmet, lightweight ice axe or crampons, or can also be used to compress the 16-liter Vertrail pack itself. Inside there is a dedicated sleeve for a hydration bladder of up to 3 liters.

The Vertrail excels at high-speed endeavors. But that’s not all. When it comes to robustness it can easily hold its own against classic-style alpine packs. And what’s more, the Vertrail is fully waterproof. Because traveling light means the small amount of gear these alpinists have with them needs to stay dry. Dry clothes can literally save the day when the weather suddenly turns. The Vertrail is made from hardwearing material with taped and welded waterproof seams. TPU-coated zippers and a new lid design with roll-top closure (for extra space when needed) provide additional protection from rain and water spray. As with all deuter products the waterproof performance is PFC free.
