He became famous for being the one who cut the rope that his mate Joe Simpson was climbing during the ascent of the West Face of Siula Grande (Peruvian Andes) in the 1985. The story has been told by the same Simpson through the book Touching the Void and the film of the same name.

We are talking about the English mountaineer Simon Yates. Yates (1963) is a world-class mountaineer that after the accident of 1985, completed a long list of ascensions on the highest peaks of Himalayan, Pakistan and of US where he also reached untouched summits.
